MATH

• Hosted a math workshop for area middle school teachers in college readiness / ACT testing; 61 participants involving 8 counties and 26 schools
• Hosted 353 middle school students for math bowl while providing college readiness information for the 45 accompanying teachers

READING

• Dr. Tim Shanahan, International Reading Association President, led reading workshop for 91 area teachers
• Dr. Joan Lord, SREB, presented a Teaching Reading Beyond Elementary for the P-16 Council

WORKFORCE PREPARATION / ADULT LITERACY

• Dr. Gary Nixon , Executive Director, Tennessee School Boards Association, presented the new Tennessee Diploma Project to directors of schools and P-16 Council members
• Provided 8^th-12^th grade counselor’s workshop on facilitation skills for transitioning students

TECHNOLOGY

• Assisted 11^th and 12^th graders to take college-level work through video streaming; tested system with Union County High School
• Offered a 3-day Women in Technology camp for 29 rising 8^th and 9^th grade girls
• Hosted a Broadband Forum for Mid-East Region led by Mr. Don Hurst, Carter County Tomorrow.
• Pilot college with P-16 leadership for TBR RODP Lap Top project for a total of fifty 11^th & 12^th grade students in Grainger and Hancock counties.

Our other two initiatives were driven by two diversity grants written last year.  They include faculty recruitment and international outreach.

FACULTY RECRUITMENT

·         Funded the adjunct faculty recruitment fair attracting (51) potential adjunct faculty

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH

·         In conjunction with the WSCC International Campus organization held two International Day Festivals on the WSCC campus

·         Translated college informational materials including financial aid material into Spanish

WORKFORCE/TECHNOLOGY

• Within the 10 county service area of the P-16 council (20) teams have signed up for a “Real World Design Competition” to design wind tunnels to explore alternative energy
• The P-16 council designed a survey to better understand the needs of the council, which has been published in the Handbook for Success
• One new local council in Grainger County has scheduled on February 19, 2009 their first organizational meeting.
• Will host February, 2009 a council meeting with Dr. Gary Nixon, Dr. Matt Murray and representative from SREB to discuss the implications of education, the economy, and preparing our regional future workforce.
